LABORATORY FACILITIES
Laboratory
is equipped with sophisticated and state-of-the-art facilities for
testing and inspection of raw materials, intermediate and finished
products. The testing facilities have been set up under advice and know
how transfer from Bohler
of Austria.
Chemical
Testing:
On line analysis systems are available to quantify the chemical
composition
of alloys undergoing various processing sequences. The analytical range
available, covers most of the ferrous alloys. Rapid analysers are used
to determine dissolved gases down to ppm level. Trace elements like
lead, tin, arsenic, antimony etc. can also be determined. The
conventional wet chemical analysis facility is also available for
routine analytical purposes.
Mechnical
/ Physical Testing:
Both destructive and non-destructive techniques are used to
characterise
materials for their mechanical and physical properties. Universal
tensile testing machines, up to a maximum of 60 tonnes capacity, are
available. The hardness testing covers Brinell, Rockwell, Vicker and
Shore Methods. The non-destructive testing is used to monitor defects
both at and below the surfaces. In this regard Ultrasonic, Magnetic
Particle and Dye Penetration tests are routinely used.
Metallography:
The Cleanliness level of all the alloys is checked using
conventional metallography techniques. The microstructural developments
following various treatments are characterised to establish structure
property relationship.
Calibration:
A well-equipped in house calibration facility is available at PSM
for calibration of thermocouples and recorders, Dimensional measuring
and pressure measuring instruments, and weight and scales. The
calibration is performed using standards traceable to national and
international standards.
The
material testing and calibration facilities are available to provide
services to external customers as well. |
